Ethos 1.6.1 Update Advisory

Summary-  The Ethos 1.6.1 update offers new keyboard functionality to the X14 and X14S transmitters.  This is important because these radios do not have a keyboard.   There is one enhancement having to do how image files change width and height parameters based on image rotation.   The rest of the new items are bug fixes.  Two issues worth pointing out, one pertains to a bug for models that have associated DSM sensors, this required a complete rewrite of the DSM sensor telemetry in Ethos, and one fixes a bug with XAct servos working with telemetry.  Note, please click on the case number for more information.




X14/X14S

  • Keys modified in the Logs Viewer to be compatible with non touch radio X14(S)
      Wheel controls the cursor (right / left)
      [Page] + Wheel controls the zoom (unchanged)
      DISP goes to the first button in the right column

This is a very useful update that will make working with X14 and X14S radios easier to work with.  If you have an X14 series transmitter, it will be worth updating just for this feature alone.

GPS coords were not correct (10 times too high) bug

This pertains to an error with GPS telemetry that started in Ethos 1.6,0.  The resulting coordinates were off by one decimal point.  This is an important update should you use a GPS for logging or mapping.  

Custom sensors may again be used as Vario source, provided their unit is m/s bug

This is for setting up a  special function custom sensor.  This is  something that would be used on a more complex build  In the accompanying example vario  pitch changes as the pitch increases or decreases.  Very neat idea.  It's useful if you need to monitor changes in pitch through the course of a flight.   This fix has a limited appeal.

Memory leak fixed in the Image Viewer bug

This is a bug fix with broad appeal.    Just looking at model files (.bmp) in  system/File Manage would cause the memory remain allocated to the image despite closing the file.  Looking at a few .bmp files would tie up a lot of memory.  This is a pretty significant bug that was fixed.   And though it may not apply to everybody, it's a bug fix with broad appeal.

Model data invalid when importing a model with DSM2 sensors bug

This is a bug fix  with broad appeal-  People were having issues importing models associated with Spektrum receivers.  They were getting errors.  This issue is now fixed.

Play value fixes (Switches / Logic switches) bug

This is a bug fix with limited appeal.  The person filing the bug report was using a logic switch value for a countdown timer. 

[lua] os.copy() added again bug

This was a lua feature that was introduced in Ethos 1.5.19 that was not merged into Ethos  1.6.0 

[lua] Run the garbage collector more frequently bug

This was written specifically to help one lua script for jets.   The Jet Widget for Ethos is a neat lua script, but could cause the transmitter to go into emergency mode.   If you fly with the Jet Widget, this is a mandatory update.

Today we're working on two great things. The first is the question I get all, the time, and I do mean all the time. Can I make a model in Ethos Simuator and move it to my radio? Sure thing! I know this is going to make a lot of people very happy. You will need to make sure that your transmitter and Ethos Simulator are on the same version. If they're not, it may not work. So, what are we looking at here? I named the file FM DEMO in the transmitter. But at the bottom it's also called fm demo.bin.  In case you didn't catch it, it's lower case only.   This is the file we'll need to search for! What you can do to save time is in Windows, go to File Explorer (Windows Key + F) go to the C drive, users, find your name or the account you use, and then enter the following information. C:\Users\<user name>.  You'll want to go here to save some time, otherwise if you search your entire C drive you'll look through many thousands of windows file...

My computer can't see my transmitter!

 Now that Ethos 1.6 is starting to get some positive reviews as people learn the dance steps to  get Ethos 1.6  installed , people who haven't updated Ethos since the 1.4 era are interested in updating.  This is great.  The problem is that they sometimes can't see their transmitter when the they plug in their USB C cable.  And this is of course frustrating.  So lets go over what it's most likely not and what the problems most likely are. What the problem most likely isn't. The USB port on your transmitter most likely didn't die .  Yes, people often like to start here as the most likely cause.  Over the past few years we've seen some dead USB ports on transmitters, far less often than you expect.
